On Saturday, having to deal with heavy heads & Sargasso seaweed, 11 interpid members made it to the startline of the 1st Annual Hangover Regatta. Amongst the entries were R/C Somers Kempe, Peter 'Stinky' Martin, 'Young Will' Thompson, Tom Clarke, the DeCouto brothers, Roger Beach Jr. and nice to see back on de Rock for two minutes, Joph Carter. Our youngest competitor was Sebastian Kempe. Thank you to Kate Bowen & Leatrice Roman for the great photos (photo album of the event). Our PRO for the day was Richard Thompson and he filed this report:

The morning after the night before saw 11 intrepid sailors (hangover artist) answer the call: “Gentleman man your OPTi” at the RBYC dock. Thankfully Paul Doughty was there to show  them the pointy end of the boat from the stern and get them off the dock. The start line  was between PW’s and the Western Arm of the RBYC dock. The competitors jockeyed for position on the start line as the whistle blew. They reached out of the protected Quay and proceeded downwind towards White’s Island in 12-15 knots of wind. The course was around the  Island either clockwise or anti-clockwise and finish back at the Club between Cleopatra and the floating dock. 4 sailors elected to go clockwise around White’s Island while the majority (7) elected to do the anti-clockwise route over by the Paget shore! The spectators waited anxiously to see which group would appear around the Island first. The brightly colour sails of the larger group appeared first on the North side of the Island.  Speculation was that the smaller group still had a chance as they could reach back to the Yacht Club once they cleared the Island while the other’s would have to tack all the way back. Like bees to honey the leading boats from both sides converged just off the RBYC’s South West wall. 3 boats were very close together and reached and then went down wind to the finish. The lighter sailors now had the advantage!.....As they approached the finish line it was neck and neck between Will Thompson and Peter Martin but Will squeezed over the line in front of Peter with the help of his centre board which he used as a paddle! (no one said that wasn’t allowed!)........The highlight of the racing was when young Sebastian Kempe beat his Dad (Rear Commodore Somers Kempe) by the smallest of margins!.........after packing the boats away everyone proceeded to the bar to have a post race bloody Mary or appropriate drink to make them forget the sins of the previous evening. Suffice to say fun was had by one and all!............Respectfully submitted    Rick Thompson (PRO)

Hangover Regatta Winner

P.S. Having congratulated themselves, the sailing Hangover participants and their support group settled down to some Christmas cheer and lunch! Obviously the conversation got around to how to reward the winner of the race and in true Gold Cup fashion he was promptly thrown overboard!. Not to be outdone the runner up ended up in the water with a number of other Hangover Racers!.........Looking forward to Hangover 2! (wasn’t that a movie?)............PRO
